Many Americans feel there is not enough time to add an exercise regimen to their daily routines. A lot of evidence is emerging that favors short duration and high-intensity exercises ( AKA HIIT) over low-intensity long-duration exercise programs. This is good news for those of us with busy schedules. High-intensity aerobic type activity examples include sprinting, sprinting on a treadmill, and “sprinting on a bicycle, intense pace swimming or simply running in place. These exercises must be done with maximum effort raising your heart rate into the 85% maximum range. A sample workout includes taking a 5-minute warm-up walking through a local park. This could be followed by a 30-second sprint, followed by a 1-1/2 minute recovery time. Repeat this 2 more times followed by a cool down. This takes approximately 12 minutes to complete. Some may find it difficult to do a full out running sprint remember this could be replaced by sprinting on a bicycle or stationary bike, sprint swimming, sprinting on an elliptical or simply running in place. Research has shown that this program done 3 times per week provides the same benefit of jogging 50 minutes 3 days per week. Weight training can also be done in a high-intensity format. Instead of doing fast weightlifting, we do the opposite. One set of 10 repetitions taking 10 seconds each. 5 seconds to raise the weight followed by 5 seconds of lowering the weight. No rest in between repetitions. The lifts need to be carried out at a slow consistent pace. The weight needs to be adjusted so that you reach temporary failure at the end of your 10th repetition. At a minimum, I would suggest the bench press, seated rows, overhead press, and Lat pull Downs for the upper body and squats/leg presses for the lower body. This workout can be completed in less than 10 minutes. As with any and all exercise regimens, you should confer with your physician to make sure that you can safely execute these exercises. One should also seek assistance in the proper execution of these exercises as well as use of the machines at the gym of your choice.
